3 Calm Water Swimming Spots in Shakas Rock

Posted on Wed July 29, 2026.

Not everyone wants to fight big waves on holiday. Some of us just want to float, watch the kids splash and feel the sun on our shoulders without worrying about a rip current. Luckily Shakas Rock and the coastline around it have exactly that answer, in the form of tidal pools carved into the rocks by the Indian Ocean itself.

The water here stays warm right through winter, often sitting around 21°C, which is part of why this stretch of the Dolphin Coast has become such a popular escape for families from Gauteng and Cape Town looking for sunshine during their colder months. Here's your local guide to the three best calm water spots near Shakas Rock, what makes each one worth a visit and which one suits your family best.

Thompson's Bay Tidal Pool

Thompson's Bay sits on Ocean Drive between Ballito and Shakas Rock, and it's one of the prettiest coves on this part of the coast. The bay is sheltered from the wind, which keeps the water calm even on blustery days, and the beach itself has earned Blue Flag status for its cleanliness and safety, with qualified lifeguards and shark nets in place.

At around 90 metres long, it's one of the largest tidal pools on the Dolphin Coast, which makes it a favourite with early morning swimmers doing laps before the day heats up. Alongside the pool you'll find the famous "hole in the wall", a limestone rock formation carved out by the crashing waves, well worth a photo while you're there.

Good to know: Fishing is strictly not allowed in the Thompson's Bay tidal pool, so it stays a safe, protected space for swimmers and snorkellers alike.

If you're staying at Martinique, Thompson's Bay is a short stroll away. Guests at Santorini have direct access to the beach, making it an easy sunrise swim before breakfast on the deck.

Chaka's Rock Tidal Pool

A little further along the coast, tucked below the Skiathos and Chakas Terrace complexes, you'll find Chaka's Rock Tidal Pool. This is the pool locals rate highest for marine life and it's considered to have the richest biodiversity of any publicly accessible tidal pool in the area.

The pool falls within a protected marine area, so fishing and collecting shells or coral is not permitted, which is exactly why the underwater world here has stayed so intact. Snorkellers can expect to spot colourful reef fish, the occasional octopus and even coral growing close to shore, a rarity for this coastline.

It's a gentler, quieter alternative to the busier Ballito beaches, with rocky promontories on either side keeping the water calm and shallow enough for children to explore rock pools at low tide.

Walking distance from: Skiathos and Chakas Terrace.

Granny's Pool, Salt Rock (Tiffanys Beach)

For the smallest guests in your group, Granny's Pool in Salt Rock is the one to know. It's a firm favourite with local families precisely because it's so protected, a shallow, sandy tidal pool tucked out of the wind and swell, with none of the surf you'll find at the beaches further north.

It's a short drive from Skiathos and Chakas Terrace, and well worth the trip if you've got toddlers who want to paddle and splash without you having to watch the waves.

A quick note on the area: just north of Granny's Pool is a stretch known as Tiffany's Beach, popular with surfers and windsurfers thanks to its offshore reefs. It's a lovely spot for a walk, but the rocky conditions mean it isn't the one for little ones to swim, so keep the paddling for Granny's Pool itself.

When to visit
All three pools are swimmable year round thanks to the subtropical KZN climate, but winter (June to August) is when this coastline really shines for families escaping the cold inland. Sea temperatures hold steady enough for a proper swim, the crowds thin out once school holidays end and you've got a good chance of spotting humpback whales migrating past just offshore during the same months.
