December Holidays in Ballito: A Family Guide to the Festive Season

Posted on Mon October 26, 2026.

December on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast has its own soundtrack. Kids shrieking as they hit the water in a tidal pool, a braai crackling on the balcony at six in the evening and the sea rolling in under your bedroom window all night long.

If this is your family's first festive season in the Ballito area, this guide covers what the weather is really like, what to do with the kids, where the best tidal pools are and how to get here from the airport.

We're Beachfront Apartments, a collection of self-catering holiday apartments in Shakas Rock. It's a quiet seaside village just north of Ballito, close enough to pop into town for a coffee and far enough from the main strip that your mornings start with the sound of waves rather than traffic. Many of our December families come back year after year, so this is everything we'd tell a friend booking their first visit.

What December weather is like

December is warm, humid and made for swimming. The Indian Ocean off Ballito averages around 24°C this time of year, so even the little ones who usually tiptoe in will be happy to stay in until their fingers wrinkle. Daytime temperatures sit in the mid to high twenties and evenings stay mild enough for dinner outside on the balcony.

The North Coast gets its rain in summer, which usually means a short afternoon thunderstorm rather than a washed-out day. The clouds roll in, the rain comes down hard for an hour and then the paving steams dry in minutes while the frangipani smells twice as strong. It's a good excuse for a board game and an afternoon nap.

One thing that surprises first-time visitors is how early the day starts. Shakas Rock faces east, so the sun comes up straight out of the sea at around 5am.

Things to do with kids around Ballito in December

You could spend the whole holiday between the beach and the balcony and nobody would complain. When the kids need a change of scene, these are the places our guests keep coming back to.

For high-energy days

Karibu has fishing, padel and trampolines. There's often a waterslide running in summer too. Pack a towel and expect to stay longer than you planned.
Sugar Rush Park is home to Holla Trails and The Jump Park, so you can tire out toddlers and teenagers in one stop. Food is bought on site here, so leave the cooler box at the apartment.
For animal lovers

Burndale Farm and Flag Animal Farm are easy morning outings for little ones who want to get up close to the farm animals and run around in the fresh air.

For slow weekend mornings

The Ballito Farmers Market at Lower Oaklands Farm in Umhlali runs on Saturdays, Sundays and selected public holidays. Go early for the best pastries and fresh produce for the week's cooking.
Apprêt in Salt Rock is the bakery to know about. The Waterberry pairs breakfast with an indigenous coastal forest walk, which keeps small legs busy while you finish your coffee. Concha in Ballito is another family favourite.

For a night off from cooking

Donna Modern Italian in the New Salt Rock Centre, La Piazza and Mozambique are all good bets when nobody wants to do the dishes. Book ahead in December, because tables go fast.
For the festive days themselves

Christmas is where self-catering comes into its own. You can cook the gammon your way, set the table on the balcony and let the kids open presents in their swimming costumes. For New Year's Eve, keep an eye on local listings for the big concerts, which in recent years have been held at Sugar Rush Park.

Tidal pools and family beaches near Shakas Rock

The tidal pools are the reason so many families choose this stretch of coast. The rocks hold back the bigger waves, the water warms up in the sun and children can float, snorkel and poke around for fish and anemones while you sit close by with a flask of coffee.

Chaka's Rock Tidal Pool is a short walk from our Skiathos and Chakas Terrace apartments. It's shallow, family-friendly and known locally for having some of the richest marine life of any public tidal pool in the area. Bring a mask and snorkel and see who can spot the most fish.

Thompson's Bay Tidal Pool, which locals call Charlie's Pool, is about 90 metres long and good for laps as well as lazy floating. Santorini Estate has direct access to it and our Martinique apartments are within walking distance. Early risers get it almost to themselves at sunrise.

Granny's Pool in Salt Rock is the one to know about if you have toddlers. It's calm, shallow and a short drive north.

Willard Beach is Ballito's main beach and sits between 1.8km and 3.2km from most of our complexes, depending on where you stay. It's where you'll find the promenade, the ice cream and the buzz of the holiday crowd.

A few tips for the tidal pools: visit around low tide when the pools are calmest, pack reef shoes for little feet on the rocks and remember that fishing isn't allowed at Chaka's Rock or Thompson's Bay, so the marine life stays put for the next visitor.

Getting here

Flying in.

King Shaka International Airport is roughly 20km from Shakas Rock, which is about a 20 to 25 minute drive north on the N2. That's short enough that you could land at lunchtime and have the kids in a tidal pool by mid-afternoon. Take the Shaka's Rock exit off the N2 and you're minutes from the sea. The route passes through the Tongaat toll plaza, so keep some change or a card handy.

We'd recommend hiring a car at the airport. You'll want it for farm outings, grocery runs and the odd breakfast in Salt Rock.

Driving from Gauteng.

Many families from Johannesburg and Pretoria drive down the N3 to Durban and then head north on the N2 for the last stretch. Plan for a full day on the road with a couple of good stops along the way. December is the busiest time on the N3, so leaving before sunrise makes for a much easier trip.

Coming from Durban.

The city centre is about 50km away, roughly 40 to 45 minutes on the N2.

First-timer tips for a December holiday

These are the little things our returning guests have learned over the years. Screenshot this list before you pack.

  • Book your dates early. December is the first month to fill up on the Dolphin Coast, especially the week between Christmas and New Year.
  • Do your big grocery shop on arrival day. Shops get busy around the public holidays on 16, 25 and 26 December, so stock the fridge early and top up as you go.
  • Pack for sun and storms. High-factor sunscreen, rash vests and hats for the kids, plus a light rain jacket for the afternoon showers.
  • Bring reef shoes and a snorkel. The tidal pools are much more fun when little feet are comfortable on the rocks and everyone can see the fish.
  • Plan outings for the morning or late afternoon. The middle of the day is warm and humid, which makes it the best time for a swim, a sandwich and a nap.
  • Swim between the flags. On open beaches, stick to areas where lifeguards are on duty and save the tidal pools for low tide.
  • Book restaurants ahead. If you'd like a night off from cooking on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, reserve your table well in advance.
  • Set an alarm for sunrise at least once. With an east-facing view, you might catch dolphins moving along the backline as the sky turns pink.
